Content Writing vs Technical Writing vs Copywriting

Content writing focuses primarily on informational content aimed at a specific target audience. It involves planning, writing and publishing various types of written material, such as articles, blog posts, website copy, social media updates, and product descriptions for online consumption. Content writing aims to inform, educate and engage readers. It’s used for various purposes, including building brand awareness, increasing website traffic, generating leads, and improving search engine rankings.

Technical writing is a form of writing that conveys complex, technical information in a clear and accessible way. Some examples of technical writing include press releases, journal articles, infographics, policy briefs, white papers, proposals, tenders, user manuals, technical reports, software installation guides, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Because of the complexity of the subject matter technical writers work with, strong writing and communication skills are essential. Technical writing is not limited to written communication – it can include visual communication. Technical writing consultants frequently create user-friendly diagrams, illustrations and infographics to distil complex information for non-specialist audiences.

Copywriting typically involves working with advertising and marketing copy. It’s creative, strategic, and puts a punchy spin on your writing with the end goal of maximising sales and revenue. Content Types

In 2022, we were commissioned by a London-based, innovative learning application using the latest in cognitive science, learning design and UX design, to research and write two 20 000-word “learning pathways” (courses). This content writing project was an opportunity to combine our love of research with our flair for creative content writing, tied together neatly in a learning design format.

Our director and founder wrote one of Kinnu’s first-ever learning pathways, which delves into the mysteries of the gut microbiome. This pathway, ‘A Guide to the Incredible Gut Microbiome’, takes readers on an interdisciplinary journey into the fields of microbiology, epidemiology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, genetics and nutrition, to uncover the key to health and happiness. You can read the published content here:

The second learning pathway in this content writing project, ‘Superpower Learning: The Science of Learning’, plunges into the fascinating world of cognitive psychology and learning science. The science of learning module combines data, practices and research from a variety of disciplines, including cognitive neuroscience, data science, learning analytics, behavioural economics and educational psychology.

In terms of technical writing, we have covered legal writing and SEO writing projects, writing legal articles for a specialist attorney in the UK. We’ve written articles and blog posts for a telecommunications multinational, and proposals (technical writing) and articles (content writing) an events and entertainment group.

We have authored op-eds, press releases and website copy, written articles for a telecommunications multinational, and written proposals and articles for an events and entertainment company.

Pricing and Process

As with all our written communication and language services, we will always quote you per word, for maximum transparency. At the request of the client, we can consider an hourly rate. We’ll also give you an estimated turnaround time based on the word count, urgency, and level of complexity of your writing project. This way, you will know upfront exactly what the job will cost you and you can budget accordingly. In the unlikely event we run into delays, we will communicate with you immediately. No hidden fees. No mixed messages or unkept promises. Total transparency.

Our writing services come standard with two free reverts. We follow a rigorous quality assurance process for all written content. We use the Track Changes function in Word or Google Docs to mark up additional edits, so you can see exactly what we’ve changed or what fixes we’ve suggested and why, allowing you to maintain control over your product at every step of the process. If, after two rounds of review, you still want to make changes or additions to the text, we’ll quote you an hourly fee going forward, which we will also communicate with you upfront.
